After a simple dinner of quesadillas we headed into town for the midnight countdown in the Jardin. The place was packed to the rafters with more people showing up all the time. There was a healthy police presence as well, even some cops on horseback. These horses must have some special training to remain so calm with all the actvity around them.
Traditionally Mexican people eat twelve grapes as the bell tower peals in the new year. Each grape represents one of the twelve months ahead. It is supposed to bring good fortune and health.
Here are some pictures of the festivities. Happy new year to all of you who follow this blog...

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing...Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year Dawna! Thanks for reading.
DeleteHappy New Year Peter and Shelagh! I've enjoyed reading your blog since you left Canada but haven't commented until now. Shame on me because you were so good to comment regularly on mine while we traveled the past few years.
ReplyDeleteWe spent Christmas in San Miguel Allende 2009 after reading a New York Times article saying it was one of the best places in the world to spend Christmas. And it was!
Thanks Evelyn, we're here 'till the end of February.
DeleteHi Evelyn,
DeleteI just re-read your last blog post... It would be nice to see you pull up a chair to the keyboard again! We wish you both a happy 2016, and hopefully an adventure or two.
Cheers! Peter and Shelagh.
Looks like a fun celebration. Each area of Mexico celebrates in a different manner. I have to add that I never saw any police here in Mazatlan at the Plazuela Machado, however I'm sure some were around. I just checked with Colin and he did not either. Carnivale is an entire different situation.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Feliz Ano Nuevo.
Happy New Year you guys!! Keep on enjoying your time in SMdA!! We are currently in Fortuna CA and are looking forward to being in San Carlos probably on Tuesday the 5th. Yeehaw!! Thanks for sharing the pictures - looks like you had a great evening!!
ReplyDeleteGuess we will be meeting up with you back in the Lower Mainland in April!!
