Off to the mall...

The are stores a plenty in San Miguel, but if you want to furnish a house, buy a new wardrobe and a motorcycle and just want to get 'r done, "Liverpool" is the place for you.

We walked into town this morning and got a seat on the #9 bus and hopped off at the mall just east of town at the intersection of highway 111 and Calle Real del Conde. The two anchor stores are Liverpool and Soriana. And then there are about a dozen other stores that sell anything from cosmetics to pet food, and a movie theatre with four cinemas. Liverpool is quite up scale and offers a wide variety of products. Haute couture fashion, televisions, kitchen appliances, tools, lawnmowers and yes motorcycles including quads. There are a variety of eateries including the dreadful McD's and at the other side is a grocery store. Soriana is a neatly organized supermarket with a fresh bakery, vegetables and meats, but not as well stocked as Mega. Also I was under the impression that prices here are a bit higher at Soriana. Nevertheless, we picked up enough stuff to make a nice lunch at home and get a few extra things for a Greek dinner tonight of chicken souvlaki, a salad and some tsatziki.

Tomorrow the Christmas décor will be removed

We then crossed the street and took the #8 bus back into town. Buses are cheap here, 5 Pesos each, flat rate. Every bus has a little shrine on the dashboard, either Jesus or our Lady of Guadeloupe will protect the driver and his passengers from any harm. All the buses are old Mercedes Benz diesel chuggers and seem indestructible. When you board the bus you just find a seat if available, a young man will soon come by and trade your five Pesos for a ticket, if there is only a driver, he will give you a ticket when you enter the bus and you give him five Pesos when you leave the bus. A very simple system that works well.

  1. The Tiaguis market is right up there near the Liverpool store. Just continue walking around the traffic circle and I believe it is a little further down that cobblestone road and even further down that road is the Botanical Gardens.

    1. I can not walk over those pedestrian walkways as I get a panic attack. Peter says it is crazy I would rather play chicken with the traffic! The local buses are fun, life here is so great.
