After a simple dinner of quesadillas we headed into town for the midnight countdown in the Jardin. The place was packed to the rafters with more people showing up all the time. There was a healthy police presence as well, even some cops on horseback. These horses must have some special training to remain so calm with all the actvity around them.
Traditionally Mexican people eat twelve grapes as the bell tower peals in the new year. Each grape represents one of the twelve months ahead. It is supposed to bring good fortune and health.

Looks like a fun celebration. Each area of Mexico celebrates in a different manner. I have to add that I never saw any police here in Mazatlan at the Plazuela Machado, however I'm sure some were around. I just checked with Colin and he did not either. Carnivale is an entire different situation.
